Translations

51cdvpmiutlIn July 2016, New Directions published my translation of Horacio Castellanos Moya’s Revulsion: Thomas Bernhard in San Salvador, which received a 2015 PEN/Heim Translation Fund Award. As a long-time Bernhard fan who speaks Spanish and traveled through El Salvador when I was 23, I pretty much had to translate this, especially once I read Roberto Bolaño’s praise in Between Parentheses.

Here’s a short essay on translating it and an excerpt and an interview. Excerpts also appeared in PEN America: A Journal for Writers and Readers, the February 2015 issue of Harper’s, the Summer 2016 issue of Brick, and Triple Canopy.

On December 30, 2016, The New Yorker’s James Wood cited Revulsion as one of his four favorites of 2016:

For Vice.com, I occasionally translated interviews with Spanish-speaking authors and directors, all of which you can find here. They included Ciro Guerra, Alejandro Zambra, Claudia Llosa, Pablo Larraín, and the great Alejandro Jodorowsky. I also interviewed the young Spanish director Eduardo Casanova about his short film “Eat My Shit,” and I translated this excellent little essay by Yoss about humor in Cuba after Castro’s death.
